5 affordable beauty trends from New York Fashion Week Spring 2023

New York Fashion Week is never just about the clothing — it’s also where the best of the best in makeup and hair work with designers to create iconic looks, resurface trends, and introduce novelties in beauty. Straight from September’s NYFW, Spring 2023, here are five easy tips to bring what’s happening in beauty into your vibe.

1. Classic cherry red lipstick

Like the LBD, a red lip never goes out of style. This season sports the classic color with a precise line and glossy finish, as seen in Christian Soriano’s gorgeous nod to Audrey Hepburn and old Hollywood glam.

Tip: Start with a lip balm, apply lipstick directly, then define with lipliner — a much easier process for red and darker colors. Add shine with a clear gloss in the center of your smooch.

Try: Russian Red by MAC ($21) is the perfect blue red and looks flattering nearly on all skin tones. Pair with MAC’s Cherry liner for an exact match, or deepen the hue with a wine liner for a sexy Bordeaux pout.

2. Sleek buns and topknots

Several designers brought back the bun, including Jason Wu with the ends of the hair poking out, and Naeem Kahn with a tidy topknot. In all instances, the sides were combed down and sleek—a refreshing departure from the tiresome messiness a few years back.

Tip: Secure hair back with polybands — or use more than one for unique styles — to steer clear of bulky ties and pins that can interrupt your look. Then lock down those sides with spray or pomade.

Try: GOODY Ouchless Womens Polyband Elastic Hair Ties in clear do the trick! Be sure to pack a couple extra in your clutch if one should snap — unlikely, but better to be prepared.

3. Glittery, disco eyeshadow

From sparkly lids at Tory Burch to subtle highlights at Rebecca Minkoff, glittery eyes will never retire — at any age — as long as fabulousness is still in style.

Tip: Be intentional with your application and let the glitter steal the show. Apply to lids, inner corners, outer lash line or as a dot in the center of your lower lash line for some funky fun.

Try: Liquid Glitter Eyeshadow by e.l.f. ($6) is everything. Apply it with the application wand — quickly — for a substantial layer pigment and shine.

4. Side-part hairstyles

Guess who’s back? Our old friend, the side part made her return at Tommy Hilfiger, and with good cause. The asymmetry of this style flatters every face shape and automatically adds a touch of class.

Tip: Comb through the crown of your hair (when wet, if possible) to see where it naturally falls. This is where you should create your part using the tip of a tail comb. (Use the brush end to flatten fuzzies.)

Try: Sure I could add sprays or pomades here, but if you don’t have a tool like this Tooth Tail Silkomb by Cricket, you risk some seriously sloppy side action.

5. Natural, dewy skin

After two years of paying extra attention to our complexion during the pandemic, a palette of fresh skin is the loveliest compliment to every garment, seen best dewy at AnOnlyChild and clean at Kate Spade.

Tip: Add a healthy glow with an illuminating moisturizer alone or under a sheer foundation for extra radiance.

Try: A must-have in my kit, the No7 Lift & Luminate Day Cream ($28) adds a beautiful base to reflect light, a fragrance-free moisture, and even SPF 30 protection to your morning (or evening) look.
