Meet Lara Levitan, the Chicago Xennial writing a novel about celebrity obsession
I’m Lara Levitan — not really a Millennial, not quite a Gen Xer … a Xennial?) I’m 44 and live in the Avondale neighborhood in Chicago.
By day, I’m revising my second novel, redefining my professional identity, rearranging my resume, and striving to remain Zen about all of it. By night, I’m putting away my phone after family dinner and putting myself to bed by 9pm.
By weekend, I sleep in until 6 am (lol), hang with my husband and daughter, and refrain from cooking as much as possible (although that never really happens).
I’m in the midst of:
- loving the people around me for who they are rather than who I’d prefer them to be.
- being obsessed with my dog Lucky, the best shih-tzu poodle ever to walk the earth.
- feeling something sacred, every day.
For me, the best thing about being 44 is caring less about “fitting in” and the worst thing is playing Ultimate PMS (as in, way more symptomatic than I’ve ever been).

What’s next for me:
By the end of summer 2023, I’ll have a shiny draft of my juicy new novel. It explores celebrity obsession, marital secret-keeping, how even the question of motherhood affects women, and the pursuit of art in a culture of commodity. Oh, and I’ll be religiously reading The Midst!
